Komen Foundation hired a right-wing “pro-lifer” as their Policy VP. Her name is Karen Handel, and she previously ran for political office with a platform of defunding Planned Parenthood. Surprise surprise, Komen is now withdrawing financial support for Planned Parenthood.
Is it “pro-life” to defund an organization that offers critical health services and screenings for women who might otherwise never be able to afford it? Planned Parenthood services do not revolve around abortion, much as these right-wingers would have you believe. In fact, they account for less than 15% of their budget, or 3% of services rendered. In college, I used the local Planned Parenthood for my annual exams and learn about my contraceptive options.
If you typically send donations to Komen or participate in their Race for the Cure, know that because of Karen Handel, you will only be racing for a cure for those people who can afford healthcare. Instead, donate to Planned Parenthood Action Fund (again, top link) in memory of those you may have lost and/or survivors. ALL women should have access to these critical screenings, not just those who can afford insurance. Contact Komen (1 877 GO KOMEN) and demand they change their stance AND immediately fire Karen Handel.
